Isomerisation

Isomerisation

Isomerisation of n-alkanes into branched-chain alkanes in which the side-chain is a methyl group, may be brought about by heating the n-alkane with aluminium chloride at 300oC, e.g., n-butane isomerizes into isobutene.

Isomerisation

The formation of an equilibrium mixture of n- and isobutene from n-butane with the iso-compound predominating may be explained by the fact that the t-carbonium ion is more stable than the s-carbonium ion.
